CRN: Atlantic Broadcasters Denied New Country Station Antigonish, Nova Scotia
CANADIAN RADIO NEWS, Net News 0

NEW COUNTRY STATION DENIED FOR ANTIGONISH

An application by Atlantic Broadcasters a new Country station in Antigonish, Nova Scotia has been rejected by the CRTC. The new station would have operated on 93.5 with 60,600 watts (average and maximum ERP). Antenna height would have been 215 metres (EHAAT) with a non-directional radiation pattern. It would have become a sister station to CJFX 98.9 in Antigonish.

Interventions were filed from MacEachern Broadcasting Limited (CIGO 101.5 Port Hawkesbury) and Hector Broadcasting Company (CKEC 94.1 & CKEZ 97.9 in New Glasgow) opposing the proposed new station on the grounds that it would have a negative financial impact on their existing operations. The CRTC sided with the interveners.

When the CRN Facebook page first ran this story back on May 10th it generated the most viewed post in our history capturing close to 34,000 hits. I have a feeling that there are going to be a lot of unhappy people in the Antigonish area over this decision. Perhaps Atlantic Broadcasters might want to re-apply with lower power so the signal is not a factor in adjacent markets.

Canadian Radio News: Kelowna with two low powered stations on the way
CANADIAN RADIO NEWS 0

While checking out the latest Industry Canada database I noticed two new entries for Kelowna. CHLL 95.3 with 50 watts and VF2675 102.3 with 50 watts. I immediately went into the “dig up information” mode.

CHLL 95.3 will be a new Tourist Information station operated by Kelowna businessman Jim Ripley. There will be also be a 50 watt repeater in Peachland CHLL-1 at 92.1. Mr. Ripley plans to put a lot more of these types of stations on the air in the near future:

www.touristradio.ca/

VF2675 102.3 is a mystery. The facility is licensed to Asian Connections Entertainment with an address in Richmond, B.C. There is a company by that name that operates a Punjabi language specialty TV service on cable across Canada. I am not sure if the two are connected. Any information would be appreciated.
