Canadian rock band Zeus covered Big Star during their Classic Rock disCOVERy Series session. The harmonies are absolutely flawless and the cover is beautiful. Zeus also serve as the backing band for former Broken Social Scene member Jason Collett.
And for fun this week I invited an a capella group to Q107 for a Classic Rock disCOVERy Series. The A Capella Fella’s covered The Beatles and it is awesome! Follow me on Q107.com, Facebook and Twitter.
Joel Plaskett was in Toronto recently supporting Mo Kenney. Plaskett produced her debut album and even sings on the track Deja Vu. It was a fun visit with Plaskett covering a Springsteen tune and Mo playing Five Years by David Bowie. The song is also on her new album.
Yesterday I had the pleasure of welcoming both Joel Plaskett and up and comer Mo Kenney to the Q107 studio. Mo just released her brand new album co written and produced by Plaskett. On that debut album is an incredible version of 5 years by David Bowie. Check out the acoustic version from yesterday. Also listen to her brand new single Deja Vu.
Next week on Airchecker, Joel Plaskett covers The Boss and plays his brand new song Harbour Boys. For more amazing acoustic performances check out The Candice Rock Blog on Q107.com and follow me on Twitter.

I am sure you have heard a lot about the Indiegogo/Kickstarter campaigns that musicians are doing now. Some people think it is lazy to ask your family and friends for money so you can record while others think it is a great way to get funding. One of my Q107 Indie Invaders Noel Johnson, is nearing the end of his pre buy campaign. The nice thing about THIS campaign is that if he doesn’t hit his goal, you get your money back. So it is not charity at all. You either get a wicked album or your cash back. I would rather pre buy an album and wait a couple months then have to wait around for a musician to save $10000 waiting tables for some new tunes. This is also a great way to promote an album that isn’t even out yet. You can check out his album pre buy campaign here.
This is one of the songs that will be on the upcoming album if he gets the funding via indiegogo.com/noeljohnson
So naturally, I invited them in for a visit. Little Foot Long Foot is a threesome fronted by Joan Smith. It’s like the Black Keys with a chick singer. Joan can shred and sing and watching the band is absolutely incredible! LFLF used to be in a Zepellin cover band called Red Zeppelin so Joan covered Gallows Pole for the CLASSIC ROCK disCOVERy SERIES on Q107.com. Enjoy!
Honheehonhee stopped by Q107 Toronto yesterday and I couldn’t wait to share their Classic Rock disCOVERy Series with you! This band is out of Montreal and fronted by a famous busker on the Metro. Greg is busking to pay for the upcoming tour. He is also the handsome little girl in the pink tutu on the front of their debut album “Shouts”. These guys and girl have got it together. Their Solsbury Hill cover was great and they even did the screaming and cheering bit at the end. Their debut album is also wicked. They will be in Toronto to play Sneaky Dee’s tomorrow night as part of NXNE. Hope you like this one as much as I do.
So this week Q107 Indie Invaders Secret Broadcast released a video saying they will call each and every person that buys their new EP. Here is the video.
They admit it will be time consuming but that is how much their fans mean to them. I had the pleasure of meeting Secret Broadcast while working at X92.9 in Calgary. They moved about a year before I did so it was only fitting that I got them in for a Q107 Classic Rock Indie Invasion Session. They did a wicked version of U2’s I Will Follow.
Along with an acoustic version of the new single Ray Gun.
Check out the interview here.
In this day and age it is getting harder and harder for bands to come up with creative ways to get their name out there. So kudo’s to Secret Broadcast! I have no doubt they will call each and every one of you. For more on The Candice Rock Blog. Follow me on twitter and facebook.
Our first band with a sweet set of strings is Tight Knit Skirts out of Saskatoon.
Next up Noel Johnson joined by David Poulin from Toronto by way of Calgary.
And this is Amos The Transparent out of Ottawa. Love the cello on this track!
To date there have been more than 30 Classic Rock Indie Invasion Sessions on Q107.com. A couple classic rock artists keep popping up. Last week I posted bands that are crazy about Neil Young. This week it’s The Boss. Who doesn’t love Bruce Springsteen?
This is The Autumn Portrait out of Calgary. These guys came in at the end of CMW so Freddie’s voice is a little on the raspy side after 5 days of concerts, clinics and networking. Check out their session here.
One thing I noticed as soon as I started doing the Classic Rock Indie Invasion Sessions on Q107.com was the amount of musicians who want to cover Neil Young. He is such a big influence on musicians today. Here are a few Neil Young covers from The Candice Rock Blog.
First up Jane’s Party from Toronto. This is Eamon McGrath from Toronto by way of Edmonton. And finally Beekeeper from Vancouver cover Hey Hey My My Next week bands that like to cover Bruce Springsteen. Follow me on Twitter and Facebook.
This week on The Candice Rock Blog I am featuring a few artists from Alberta. With the upcoming election and all I thought you could use a little break. Colleen Brown is from Edmonton but currently resides in Toronto. She has the most unique voice I think I have ever heard and I was super excited when she said she wanted to cover Heart’s Barracuda for a Classic Rock Indie Invasion Session on Q107.com. I never thought it would sound like this! Love it.
Eamon McGrath is also from Edmonton and making serious noise here in Toronto. He just released the album Young Canadians with Whitewhale Records. I love the raw, rough, grumbly voice he has. And finally Bigger Fish Than Guns out of Calgary. They recently won $25000 from X92.9 in Calgary and have been playing their butts off ever since. Kevin Dorin was in Toronto for Canada Music Week and I have to admit, I was impressed with his performance on day 5 of CMW. The whole week is bands, bars, drinks and socializing. After 5 days straight I thought he would be exhausted but his passion for what he does perservered and he blew me away with this tune.
My name is Candice Knihnitski. I produce The Kim Mitchell Show on Q107, host The Candice Rock Blog on Q107.com and guest host on The Edge. I have worked in four provinces during my twelve year career and you can read all about my radio adventures including my stripper DJ days on candicekradio.com.
I have always been passionate about indie music and that is what led me to start The Candice Rock Blog. Working at a classic rock station I wanted to blend the two and the Classic Rock Indie Invasion Sessions were born. On this blog, you will be introduced to some of the best unknown talent this country has to offer. So let’s get started.
First off is the Vancouver based band Sidney York. This is not your typical band with guitar, bass, drums and vocals. Sidney York boasts an oboe, bassoon and french horn too.
This is an acoustic version of their new single Cold In Here.
Also check out the video for Dick & Jane. You might recognize the whistling stylings of Ryan from Mother Mother in this track.
Next up is Jane’s Party out of Toronto. During the Classic Rock Indie Invasion Sessions I get bands to cover their favorite classic rock tune. Here is Jane’s Party covering Mother by Pink Floyd.
Check out their live performance on Balcony TV.
If you know a band that might be interested in participating please email me email@example.com. Thanks again to Airchecker for inviting me to guest blog. Check back next week for two more awesome bands you have probably never heard of but will want to hear again. Thanks-CK.
